Holding Company
Aveng Limited is listed in South Africa on the JSE Limited in the Construction and Materials sector. It has a broad shareholder base of public and institutional shareholders with more than 30% of the company held by international investors. The Aveng Group led the way in the construction and steel industries by being the first significant group to conclude a high-level black economic empowerment transaction, resulting in 25% of its South African subsidiaries being owned by the Tiso led broad-based empowerment consortium.
The Aveng Group boasts a proud South African heritage going back 116 years, to a small construction company owned by James Thompson in Johannesburg. Today the group has operations across the construction value chain and provides jobs to more than 31 000 people. It has successfully expanded internationally to pursue its vision to be a "globally-competitive construction-related group focused principally on the developing world". Last year the Aveng Group worked in 29 countries.
The group is comprised of two clusters, namely the Engineering and Construction cluster, and the Steel and Allied cluster.
In Africa, the Engineering and Construction cluster consists of Grinaker-LTA, the construction subsidiary, Moolmans, an opencast mining contractor and E+PC (Engineering and Projects Company), providing comprehensive engineering design, procurement and construction management services. Wholly owned multi-disciplinary construction company, McConnell Dowell, operating in Australasia and the Pacific Rim, also forms part of the Engineering and Construction cluster. The group's key differentiator is the depth and breadth of its capabilities. The geographic spread, significant capacity, complementary capabilities and broad experience add value to the clients' risk management procedures and in turn guide project selection and strategic focus. Successful projects include pipelines, opencast mines, casinos, shopping malls, roads, dams, harbours and a wide range of other commercial and infrastructural developments.
The Steel and Allied cluster includes Trident Steel, which supplies a wide product range to the steel and automotive industries, and Aveng's manufacturing businesses - Duraset, Infraset and Steeledale which produce a variety of steel and concrete products for the mining, manufacturing and construction industries and Lenning Rail which offers rail track construction and maintenance services.
The operating groups, functioning as independent companies, report to the holding company, Aveng which drives strategy and offers leadership to the subsidiary companies.
As the majority of the Aveng Group's businesses are engaged in operations that are inherently dangerous, safety is a core value. The group views the health and safety of its employees as one of its most important duties, and realises that a safe working environment also makes sound commercial sense.
